Duty Solicitors

At your first appearance in court you can seek the help of a Duty Solicitor, free of charge. This service is provided by a rota of local solicitors who are independent of the police and the courts. It is often the simplest way of obtaining advice and, if necessary, representation for a straightforward or minor case.

Legal Aid

If your case is serious or complex, and you cannot afford a solicitor or lawyer, you will need to apply to the court for legal aid. In doing so, you may nominate a solicitor of your own choice to represent you. He or she will help you apply for legal aid. Your local Citizens Advice Bureau or the Legal Services Comission can help you find a solicitor.
