 Summoning

Jurors are chosen at random from the electoral roll to serve on a jury - their job is to decide the outcome of a trial. A jury is always made up of 12 people selected by computer from a cross-section of our society. They are asked to take an impartial approach to the case to ensure that a fair trial takes place. If summoned, you are legally required to serve on a jury unless you are ineligible for, or disqualified from, jury service.

The Jury Summons tells you which court you have been summoned to attend and the date and time on which your service will begin. It also provides contact details for the Jury Central Summoning Bureau, where you may direct any queries you have about jury service at that point. The remainder of the form constitutes your reply to the Jury Summons and allows you to give the Jury Central Summoning Bureau additional information about yourself. You must reply to the Jury Summons within 7 days of receipt.

If you have confirmed that you are able to serve at the time you have been summoned, you will receive details of how to get to the court and what to expect once you're there. If you have any disability for which the court will need to make special arrangements, please inform your summoning officer or the court you are due to attend.

If you apply to have your jury service deferred or to be excused from jury service you will receive confirmation of whether your application has been granted. You should receive a reply within 10 days of sending your letter.
