The Jury Room

The jury room is where the jurors go to discuss the evidence presented in the trial and decide on the verdict. The jury must choose a spokesperson who will deliver the verdict to the court. This person is called the foreman.

Whilst in the jury room, members of the jury are not allowed to have contact with the outside except by giving a note to the usher.

As a juror, if you want the judge to clarify or explain anything about the case, you may send a note. You will then go back into the courtroom and the judge will give you as much help as possible, but remember - no new evidence can be given at this stage.

The jury will be given plenty of time to discuss the evidence amongst themselves and agree on the verdict. However, in some cases, jurors don't all agree. In these situations the judge may accept a decision upon which most, but not all members of the jury are agreed. This is known as a majority decision.
