Welcome to the offender section of CJS Online

An offender is someone who has been found guilty of committing a crime. The information in this section will explain to offenders, or their families, what happens once they have been convicted.

A range of sentencing options exist to punish and rehabilitate offenders. When deciding on the type of sentence to impose the courts consider the type, seriousness and cirumstances of the crime as well as the safety of the public. Click on the navigation buttons on the left to find information about different types of sentences, such as custodial (prison) and community sentences, and programmes aimed at rehabilitating offenders, such as drug treatment.

The virtual tour of a prison will give you a chance to see what happens when a man, woman or young offender is sent to prison. Click on the link on the right hand side of this page to access the Prison Walkthrough.
