Rules

Over 108,000 offences against prison discipline are punished by the authorities each year. For most prisoners however, appearing before a disciplinary hearing (known as adjudication) is a rare event.

Offences against prison discipline range from very serious offences (e.g. hostage-taking or attempted escape) to less serious charges (e.g. intentionally failing to work properly). A full list of offences can be found in the Prisoners' Information Book for Male Prisoners and Young Offenders or the Prisoners' Information Book for Women Prisoners and Female Offenders.

If a prisoner breaks any of these rules, he or she may be subject to disciplinary proceedings. Punishment for breaking the rules could include removal of privileges, confinement to a cell, or even result in them serving more of their sentence in custody.
