Prison Walkthrough - Leaving Prison

Leaving Prison

Release from prison

Property including any clothing taken when the prisoner first arrived is returned; a travel warrant and a discharge grant are also paid unless you are a remand prisoner. Prisoners will be given breakfast on the day of release. The release time is usually around 8:45am although this may vary.

Probation

The National Probation Service is responsible for supervising prisons when they are released back into the community. Release at some point before the sentence is completed (for those serving 12 months or more) is on the basis of a prisoner agreeing to the conditions of an Automatic Conditional Release Licence. If the prisoner breaches their licence conditions they may be fined or sent back to prison. Prisoners serving sentences of four years or more can be sent back to prison if their behaviour is giving cause for concern.

Young Offenders

All young offenders leaving custody are subject to probation or social service supervision after release.
