07 Mar 2005

The Office for Criminal Justice Reform (OCJR) have published a consultation on the Victims' Code of Practice - a document which will give victims of crime statutory rights for the first time.

The Office for Criminal Justice Reform (OCJR) has published a consultation on the Victims' Code of Practice - a document which will give victims of crime statutory rights for the first time.

Research has shown a need to improve victim confidence in the Criminal Justice System, and the introduction of the Code of Practice will help to do this, as victims of crime will know that they can expect a high level of service from the Criminal Justice System whenever and however they come into contact with it.

Once the Code of Practice is implemented later this year, victims who aren't happy with the service they have received from any criminal justice agency will be able to take their complaint to the Parliamentary Commissioner for resolution. A Code of Practice Guide for Victims, a short version of the Code of Practice written in straightforward language is also being consulted on.

The Code deals with all stages of the criminal justice process, from reporting a crime, to the release of an offender from prison. It emphasises the need for CJS agencies to keep victims informed of the progress in their case, and gives firm deadlines for this to happen.

The Office for Criminal Justice Reform have consulted widely on the Code whilst writing it, and a list of the groups who have been formally consulted is included in the consultation document.

The public are now being asked to add their own voices to this process, so that the Code in its final form best represents the needs of the people who will need it. It is important that victims have a say in the service they receive, so please take your chance to add your input to the Code and the Guide for Victims. Consultation will be open from until May 30th 2005.
