Report on Black and Minority Ethnic people's perceptions of fair treatment by the Criminal Justice System

18 Oct 2005

The Criminal Justice System (CJS) Race Unit today publishes a report detailing views from Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) people who attended focus groups run by the market research company MORI. The report was compiled from the views of these focus group attendees on questions around perceptions of fair treatment by the CJS. 16 groups across the country from London to Manchester were asked the same questions and these views were brought together by MORI.

The report shows that there are a number of key areas where we can improve the perceptions of people from Black and Minority Ethnic communities. Work being undertaken by the Office for Criminal Justice Reform on a number of issues includes communicating about the CJS, providing career information for schools and delivering change in the police use of stop and search.

The report is being published in the second Inside Justice Week running across England and Wales (17 - 23 October 2005). Throughout the week, a range of local justice-related events are being run by the 42 Local Criminal Justice Boards. Hundreds of schools and members of the public are taking part in activities, including court open days and mock trials where they will learn more about the justice system and how they can get involved.
