Commissioner for victims and witnesses

25 Jan 2006

A recruitment campaign to appoint - for the first time - a new Commissioner for Victims and Witnesses was launched today by Home Office Minister Fiona Mactaggart.

Victims of crime need support to rebuild their lives. Responding effectively to the needs and concerns of victims of crime is a key element of a successful criminal justice system.

This new post will provide an independent voice on how best to meet the needs of victims and witnesses and develop support services.

The role will include:

  • Sitting on the Victims Advisory Panel;
  • keeping the new Code of Practice for Victims of Crime under review;
  • making recommendations on national policy making and funding; and bringing together all partners across the criminal justice system to ensure they work together effectively.

Fiona Mactaggart said:

"There has been real progress in developing support and practical advice for victims across public services and the voluntary sector. The new and challenging role of Victims and Witnesses Commissioner will build on this and ensure that their voices are taken straight to the heart of Government.

"Victims should receive the support they need to help them get their lives back on track and while individually those needs may vary, by establishing a champion for victims who can connect with Government, support for victims will continue to be improved."
