Quarterly performance figures for Local Criminal Justice Boards published 3 May 2007

The latest quarterly regional performance figures for the Criminal Justice System are published today.

The figures, for the quarter to December 2006 and covering England and Wales, show:

  • 1.40 million offences were brought to justice in the year to December 2006. This exceeds the level of the target to bring 1.25 million offences to justice in 2007/08, and represents an increase of 39.6% on the baseline year ending March 2002.
  • The PYO pledge was to halve the average time from arrest to sentence for persistent young offenders from 142 days to 71 days. The average time for the quarter to December 2006 was 72 days.
  • The proportion of ineffectie trials in the Crown Court has fallen to 12.5% from 23.7% in 2002, thus is ahead of the March 2007 target of 14.2%.
  • The payment rate of fines issued by criminal courts has increased from 76% between October and December 2005 to 95% between October and December 2006. This exceeds the March 2007 target of 83%.
  • The number of outstanding Failure To Appear (FTA) warrants has decreased by 35% since March 2005, and has reached the level required to meet the March 2007 target of 35%.
  • The proportion of FTA warrants notified to the police within 1 working day has increased from 85% between October and December 2005 to 93% between October and December 2006, exceeding the 90% target. The proportion notified within 3 working days has increased from 96% to 99% over the same period.
  • The average time to resolve community penalty breaches for the period October to December 2006 was 43 days against a target of 35 days.
  • The percentage of breaches resolved within 25 working days for this same period was 50%, meeting the target level of 50%.
  • Public confidence in the ability of the Criminal Justice System (CJS) to bring offenders to justice has improved to 42% from 39% in March 2003. This is currently on track to meet the March 2007/08 target of having achieved a statistically significant increase.
