Improving the Trial Process for Young Witnesses

Improving the Criminal Trial Process for Young Witnesses

22 Jun 2007

The Government recognises that witnesses are vital to the success of the criminal justice process and is determined to ensure that young victims and witnesses have access to justice.

The Government has already instituted a number of measures such as the Code of Practice for Victims of Crime, Witness Care Units and a range of special measures to assist young witnesses in court. However more can be done.

The Consultation paper Improving the Criminal Trial Process for Young Witnesses is intended to allow the public, Criminal Justice System professionals and institutions to contribute to the ongoing discussion about how best to help young witnesses and victims get access to justice and to achieve their best evidence. It contains a number of specific recommendations but also invites views and suggestions on general issues such as making better use of technology, improving trial management and increasing choice for young witnesses.
