Quarterly Performance Figures for Local Criminal Justice Boards published 31 July 2007

The latest quarterly regional performance figures for the Criminal Justice System are published today.

The figures, for the quarter to March 2007 and covering England and Wales, show:

  • 1.42 million offences were brought to justice in the year to March 2007. This exceeds the level of the Public Service Agreement target to bring 1.25 million offences to justice in 2007/08 and represents an increase of 41% on the baseline year ending March 2002
  • The Persistent Young Offender Pledge was to halve the average time from arrest to sentence for persistent young offenders from 142 days to 71 days. The average time for the quarter to March 2007 was 72 days
  • The proportion of ineffective trials in the Crown Court has fallen to 11.5% from 23.7% in 2002, thus exceeding the March 2007 target of 14.2%
  • The proportion of ineffective trials in magistrates' courts has fallen to 18.9% from 30.9% in 2002, thus exceeding the March 2007 target of 19.4%
  • The payment rate of fines issued by criminal courts has increased from 84% between January and March 2006 to 94% between January and March 2007, thus exceeding the March 2007 target to achieve a payment rate of 83%
  • The number of outstanding Failure To Appear (FTA) warrants has decreased by 40% since March 2005 and has exceeded the March 2007 target of a 35% reduction
  • The proportion of FTA warrants notified to the police within 1 working day has increased from 88% between January and March 2006 to 95% between January and March 2007, exceeding the 90% target. The proportion notified within 3 working days has increased from 96% to 99% over the same period
  • The average time to resolve community penalty breaches for the period January to March 2007 was 45 days against a target of 35 days
  • The percentage of breaches resolved within 25 working days for the period January to March 2007 was 50%, meeting the target level of 50%
  • Performance on public confidence in the Criminal Justice System peaked at 44% for the year to March 2006. However confidence dipped to 41% for the year to March 2007 against a baseline of 43% for the year ending March 2005
