New Criminal Justice System targets announced for 2008-2011

10 Oct 2007

The Government today published the outcome of its Comprehensive Spending Review. The white paper sets out departmental budgets and priorities for the next three financial years. This includes the three departments which are jointly responsible for the Criminal Justice System (CJS) - the Home Office, the Ministry of Justice and the Law Officers.

A new Public Service Agreement (PSA) for the CJS has been announced as part of the review. The PSA objective is to deliver a more effective, transparent and responsive Criminal Justice System for victims and the public.

Within that PSA are five specific commitments to:

  1. improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the CJS in bringing offences to justice;
  2. improve public confidence in the fairness and effectiveness of the CJS;
  3. improve victim satisfaction with the Police; and victim and witness satisfaction with the CJS;
  4. provide consistent collection, analysis and use of good quality ethnicity data to identify and address race disproportionality in the CJS;
  5. recover £250 million of criminal assets (by 2009/10).

A press release has been issued which provides more details of the new budgets and priorities for the three CJS departments, which you can download by clicking on the link to the right.
