Quarterly performance figures for Local Criminal Justice Boards published

The latest quarterly regional performance figures for the Criminal Justice System are published today.

The figures, for the quarter to June 2007 and covering England and Wales , show:

1.43 million offences were brought to justice in the twelve months to June 2007. This exceeds the level of the PSA target to bring 1.25 million offences to justice in 2007/08, and represents an increase of 43% on the baseline year ending March 2002.

The PYO pledge was to halve the average time from arrest to sentence for persistent young offenders from 142 days to 71 days. The average time for the quarter to June 2007 was 67 days.

The number of outstanding Failure To Appear (FTA) warrants has decreased by more than 40% since March 2005, but has not achieved the March 2008 target of a 47% reduction.

The proportion of FTA warrants notified to the police within 1 working day has reduced from 92% between April and June 2006 to 91% between April and June 2007, still exceeding the 90% target. The proportion notified within 3 working days remained stable at 98% over the same period.

The proportion of FTA warrants executed in a timely manner, between April and June 2007, for Category A warrants was 63% within 14 working days, for Category B warrants was 67% within 21 working days and for Category C warrants was 65% within 28 working days, against a target of 70%, 70% and 60% respectively.

The average time to resolve community penalty breaches for the period April to June 2007 was 42 days against a target of 35 days.

The percentage of breaches resolved within 25 working days for the period April to June 2007 was 55%, not achieving the 07/08 target level of 60%.

Performance on public confidence in the CJS peaked at 44% for the year to March 2006. However, confidence dipped to 42 % for the year to June 2007 against a baseline of 43% for the year ending March 2005.

The payment rate of fines issued by criminal courts has increased from 85% between April and June 2006 to 93% between April and June 2007. Thus meeting the March 2008 target to achieve a payment rate of 85%.
