Witness and Victim Experience Survey (WAVES) – first results published
3 July 2008
The survey, known as WAVES (Witness and Victim Experience Survey), asks victims and witnesses of crime how well they thought the CJS treated them and what support they received - for example advice leaflets, court familiarisation visits or updates on what was happening in their case.
The CJS will use the information to target gaps in service provision. The survey is repeated quarterly on an internal basis to monitor improvements.
The Chief Executive of the Office for Criminal Justice Reform, Jonathan Slater, said:
"The WAVES survey underpins our commitment to put victims and witnesses at the heart of the Criminal Justice System.
"This survey will help us to identify where help and support is needed and where agencies across the CJS should target their resources to meet that need."
Nearly 23,000 victims and witnesses of crime across England and Wales whose case was finalised by the CJS between February 2005 and January 2006, were interviewed about their experiences.
