Progress report published on 'Peart Review' recommendations

A Criminal Justice System cross-agency working group today reported on the progress made following the 'Peart Review', published on 28 April 2008.

This review was part of a joint Inspectorate investigation into the circumstances which lead to Anthony Leon Peart being at liberty on 29 July 2005 when Richard Whelan was fatally stabbed by him.

Following the review, progress has been made against several of the recommendations within it. The Criminal Procedure Rule Committee is amending its rules to require notice to be given when putting forward potential bail addresses, so that the suitability of an address can be checked; the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) has produced guidance to its prosecutors on post-conviction bail issues and the CPS and National Policing Improvement Agency have updated guidance to cover the situation where a defendant is arrested for a new offence while in breach of a bail condition.
