 Protecting yourself

Steps can be taken to reduce the risk of becoming a victim of crime. If you would like to find out more about crime prevention contact your local police for advice.

The Home Office crime prevention guide, ‘Be Safe, Be Secure’ explains how you can help to reduce your risk of becoming a victim of crime. It offers simple suggestions about protecting your home, your family and your belongings. Hard copies of the booklet can also be obtained from Home Office Publications.

There are more than 160,000 Neighbourhood Watch and Home Watch groups in the UK. Contact the National Neighbourhood Watch Association to find out if there is a group in your area or visit their website using the link on the right. If no group exists where you live, you can speak to the crime prevention officer at your local police station about starting one.

Remember - if you are not sure about anything, ask your local police for advice. Victim Support is also willing to help where it can.
